Spare The Air’s Commute Alternatives for Hurricane Hauling Employees

Finding Better Ways to Work for California’s Clean Air Initiatives!

spare the air

July 30, 2014 – When we found out that the people most susceptible to severe health problems from air pollution include “Outdoor Workers,” we knew Hurricane Hauling had to take a stand. As a company offering tree & yard services, our foreman and laborers work outside all year round a majority of the time. With that type of schedule, we are inevitably exposed to air pollution. We have now joined the Spare the Air Employer Program among hundreds of other California business to inform workforces of impending Spare the Air days, educate employees about the ways individuals can improve air quality, and motivating them to take action. Check us out listed under the Spare the Air Employer Program Members!

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issues Spare the Air Alerts when ozone pollution is forecast to reach unhealthy levels in the Bay Area. The 2014 Spare the Air smog season runs from May through October. To find out when a Spare the Air Alert is in effect, register for email AirAlerts, call 1-(800)-HELP-AIR, download the Spare the Air app or connect with Spare the Air on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.  Spare the Air Alerts will also be posted on the Spare the Air and www.baaqmd.gov websites.

What can you do?

Look for ways to share, shorten, or change your commute so you spend less time alone in your car and more time doing what you want to do.  Be “in the know” by carpooling with coworkers. Take transit where you can finally finish that novel or clean out your inbox.  Ride your bike to work and let your commute be your new gym. Find a better way to work and enjoy the many perks experienced by commuters who take transit, carpool, bike, or walk to work instead of driving alone.

Spare the Air Every Day

Help reduce pollution and prevent Spare the Air Alerts! Here are some great ways to Spare the Air and find a better way to work:

  • Walk or Ride Your Bike: Save money and improve your health, too! Use the Spare the Air app’s Bike Route Planner or the 511 Bike Mapper to plan your trip.
  • Take the Bus, Ferry or Train: Save gas & money – and reduce stress! Find the fastest route on 511 Trip Planner.
  • Carpool: Commute with colleagues or neighbors instead of driving alone. Find your rideshare match at 511.org.
  • Skip a Trip or Link Your Errands: By combining or eliminating trips, you reduce pollution in addition to saving gas and time.

How does it work?

When a Spare the Air Alert is issued, coordinators are sent an email around 1 PM the previous day asking them to notify their employees. Providing the notification the day before allows employees time to arrange carpools, figure out transit schedules or bike routes, or get permission to telecommute, thereby reducing the number of commute trips taken on a critical air quality day.

Implementing a Clean Air Policy.

For many coordinators, educating their employees before and during the season and alerting employees when a Spare the Air day is called is all their schedules or budgets permit. Some employers choose to go all out to help reduce air pollution in the Bay Area by holding contests or fairs with games and prizes. There are plenty of program ideas in-between. Air District staff is always available to help you launch or boost your program.

Tools to help you.

There are many tools to help you with your program. This program has a myriad of resources for you, including general information about air pollution and its causes and articles, tips, and graphics for company newslettersRegister for the program and get started!
