Spare The Air’s Commute Alternatives for Hurricane Hauling Employees

Finding Better Ways to Work for California’s Clean Air Initiatives!

spare the air

July 30, 2014 – When we found out that the people most susceptible to severe health problems from air pollution include “Outdoor Workers,” we knew Hurricane Hauling had to take a stand. As a company offering tree & yard services, our foreman and laborers work outside all year round a majority of the time. With that type of schedule, we are inevitably exposed to air pollution. We have now joined the Spare the Air Employer Program among hundreds of other California business to inform workforces of impending Spare the Air days, educate employees about the ways individuals can improve air quality, and motivating them to take action. Check us out listed under the Spare the Air Employer Program Members!

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issues Spare the Air Alerts when ozone pollution is forecast to reach unhealthy levels in the Bay Area. The 2014 Spare the Air smog season runs from May through October. To find out when a Spare the Air Alert is in effect, register for email AirAlerts, call 1-(800)-HELP-AIR, download the Spare the Air app or connect with Spare the Air on Facebook, Twitter and other social media.  Spare the Air Alerts will also be posted on the Spare the Air and www.baaqmd.gov websites.

What can you do?

Look for ways to share, shorten, or change your commute so you spend less time alone in your car and more time doing what you want to do.  Be “in the know” by carpooling with coworkers. Take transit where you can finally finish that novel or clean out your inbox.  Ride your bike to work and let your commute be your new gym. Find a better way to work and enjoy the many perks experienced by commuters who take transit, carpool, bike, or walk to work instead of driving alone.

Spare the Air Every Day

Help reduce pollution and prevent Spare the Air Alerts! Here are some great ways to Spare the Air and find a better way to work:

  • Commute Tips: Visit stacommutetips.org to get all the information you’re looking for about commute programs and incentives available where you live and work.
  • Walk or Ride Your Bike: Save money and improve your health, too! Use the Spare the Air app’s Bike Route Planner or the 511 Bike Mapper to plan your trip.
  • Take the Bus, Ferry or Train: Save gas & money – and reduce stress! Find the fastest route on 511 Trip Planner.
  • Carpool: Commute with colleagues or neighbors instead of driving alone. Find your rideshare match at 511.org.
  • Skip a Trip or Link Your Errands: By combining or eliminating trips, you reduce pollution in addition to saving gas and time.

How does it work?

When a Spare the Air Alert is issued, coordinators are sent an email around 1 PM the previous day asking them to notify their employees. Providing the notification the day before allows employees time to arrange carpools, figure out transit schedules or bike routes, or get permission to telecommute, thereby reducing the number of commute trips taken on a critical air quality day.

Implementing a Clean Air Policy.

For many coordinators, educating their employees before and during the season and alerting employees when a Spare the Air day is called is all their schedules or budgets permit. Some employers choose to go all out to help reduce air pollution in the Bay Area by holding contests or fairs with games and prizes. There are plenty of program ideas in-between. Air District staff is always available to help you launch or boost your program.

Tools to help you.

There are many tools to help you with your program. This program has a myriad of resources for you, including general information about air pollution and its causes and articles, tips, and graphics for company newslettersRegister for the program and get started!

Hurricane Hauling & Demolition, Inc. Joins Green Impact Campaign

Now part of a national initiative to measure energy efficiency in small businesses!

Green Impact Campaign

July 21, 2014 – Green Impact Campaign (GIC) is a nonprofit organization that is bringing student volunteers and small businesses together to make a global impact. Using cloud-based tools, GIC is training and supporting university students across the country to go out and conduct free energy surveys for small businesses. Small businesses gain community recognition and valuable custom, actionable information to make them more sustainable and profitable. Student volunteers receive professional skills through hands-on experience and carry a mission to help as many other local businesses show their commitment and learn about ways that they can reduce their energy usage. And collectively, we all benefit from living and working in better communities. See Hurricane in the GIC Directory: www.greenimpactcampaign.org/business-members/

Green Energy Survey

If you are interested in a volunteer-conducted Green Energy Survey, all you have to do is complete a 30-question survey that results in a custom, actionable plan with specific energy saving recommendations. It includes cost and saving estimates, industry comparisons, and a progress tracker to measure impact. GIC can give you access to GEMS so that you can conduct a self-survey, or a GIC volunteer can conduct the survey for you.

Sustainability Marketing & Branding

When promoting your business sustainability initiatives, be as specific and detailed whenever possible. There is a lot of greenwashing out there and the best way to combat that is to be specific and tell a story whenever possible. So for example, when you say “conserve energy and resources in our office” try to provide some tangible details such as “use of high-efficiency LED lighting in all fixtures in our office” or “conserve water in our office through the use of low-flow toilets and high-efficiency aerators.” You can read about some of GIC’s successful impact stories here: http://greenimpactcampaign.org/impact-spotlight-cove-upgrades-to-high-efficiency-lighting/.

Hurricane Hauling’s other sustainability practices include:

o   Run fleet of trucks on processed, recycled vegetable oil with Yokayo Biofuel

o   Recycle 75% of all construction and mixed debris with Marin Sanitation Services

o   Recycle 100% of dirt, rock, concrete, tree and yard debris with Marin Sanitation Services

o   Salvage and separate materials on site for re-purposing to upcyclers like The Away Station

o   Donate reusable items to 501(c)(3) salvage yards to organizations like Habitat For Humanity

o   Conserve energy and resources in our office with a Green Purchasing Policy

o   Donate services and funds to community organizations like Salvation Army and WildCare

o   Support green community and local companies with initiatives like the Green Impact Campaign

o   Use 100% renewable energy at our office from Marin Clean Energy Deep Green

Hurricane Hauling & Demolition, Inc. Nominated by Acterra Business Environmental Awards for Deconstruction Efforts

Educating Clients, Employee, and Competitors through a Small Business Environmental Program is One Way to Change Industry Standards

February 1, 2013 – Hurricane submitted its Deconstruction Service to the Acterra Business Environmental Awards as an Environmental Program that seeks to reduce, reuse, and recycle significant amounts of construction waste and keep it out of the Bay Area landfills. Acterra rewards a specific environmental project that has demonstrated significant leadership in a focused area, such as resource conservation (water, waste, energy), pollution prevention, or minimizing carbon footprint. Any private or public business entity, division or facility located in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara or Santa Cruz County is eligible to apply. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of:

  • Leadership 30%
  • Significant Environmental Benefits 30%
  • Potential Model for Business Community 20%
  • Demonstrated Commitment 20%

Hurricane Marketing Manager Tiffany Douglass put the submittal packet together in November 2012, including three pages of Q&A and six appendices. “It was a great opportunity to consolidate all the quantitative data that we have about our Deconstruction Service – i.e. pounds of waste we save compared to monthly trends in our sales, etc,” says Tiffany. “For example, according to CalRecycle.gov, 29.9 million tons of waste was disposed of last year in the state of California. That means in just 10 months, Hurricane diverged 1,632.22 tons or the equivalent to 5.46 x 10-5% of the entire state’s trash! And that’s not including our sold salvaged items…” Hurricane’s Deconstruction Service Program can only get better as we more efficiently streamline our recording practices in the future.

Three committee members of the Acterra organization met with Tiffany and Owner David Sherman on Thursday January 31st to get a tour of Hurricane’s facility and rundown of Deconstruction. All details of its financial, operational, and sustainable model were analyzed and will be considered for the finalist round.

Companies like Marin Resource Recovery, SIMS Metal Management, Ohmega Salvage, and Yokayo Biofuels – to name a few – constantly provide Hurricane with new ideas to become more environmentally conscious. “We are honored to be along side some of the most innovative and sustainable companies in the Bay Area,” states David. “Although we are a small company, we can have a big impact on how residents and contractors ‘throw away.’ And it’s thanks to our many collaborators that we’ve had such success today.”

On March 18, 2013, winners will be announced via Acterra’s website. Winners receive recognition for being innovators in their industries, positive publicity, and opportunities to expand their program’s positive impacts by publishing their best practices for other organizations to emulate. A reception will be help in May to celebrate the efforts of all the winners.

Hurricane Hauling’s other awards include the John M. McPhail, Jr. Green Business Award from Marin Conservation League; PacificSun Best of Marin in 2009, 2010, and 2011; Best of the Bay by BayList; Bay Area Green Business certification; and Sustainable 6 Award by CA Legislature Assembly Member Jared Huffman.
